I've always enjoyed reading this book, and was very excited to find it in kindle format "after all these years". However, this edition/product is basically photographs or scans of the pages, which are not sized to fit my kindle. I can see each page in the center of my kindle's display with lots of margin all around, but it requires a magnifying glass to read the text. Adjusting the font size had no effect (as the image is not text but a photograph); changing the orientation had a slight effect, but not enough to be able to dispense with the magnifying glass. I would "return" this if I could.Product details

This is one of Frank Packard’s finest novels. Master safe-cracker Harry Maul, AKA the Hawk, apparently learned nothing from a five year prison term in Sing-Sing. Almost immediately after his release from custody is reported in the newspapers he is pegged as the leader of a ruthless gang of criminals now operating in the western United States. They're called the Wire-Devils because they tap into the area's telegraph lines to learn about the movements of valuable items they then steal. Journalists are mistaken about their leadership, however. While the Hawk has recently carried out a series of daring holdups around Selkirk City, he has been preying on the local criminal organization as much or even more than he has the town's banks and railroads. Cool, resourceful, and operating under his own peculiar code of ethics, Maul continually evades capture - or worse - time and again until finally, in a very rousing finale he is- Well, read it for yourself and see. Then join me in lamenting that Packard never brought the Hawk back for a second appearance.
Written many years ago. Pretty good yarn. If I remember correctly, Frank was a railroad telegrapher and the rattle of the sounder plays a good part in the yarn. There is an O' Henry like twist at the end that is a surprise! I'll look for more of Frank Packard (and others like him). Many of those old timers wrote good stories.
I fairly enjoyed this work. A good change from my normal material. Book had a good flow to it. A "bad guy" that you hope succeed and a evil mind against him. A ending that was worth reading the book. A nice unforseen twist that was well planned and laid out. Would have given 5 stars if the action had been a touch more gripping. Good read
